Hiking: A New Kind of Fit

People commonly complain that exercise is a boring endeavor and so is a desk job. Just going to the gym for example is one good case of this problem. Running on the same treadmill, doing weights on the same machines and dancing and moving to the same aerobics class over and over again is not a fun thing to do. Sooner or later, you will get tired of doing it. With that, less motivation means less time to exercise and get fit. Also, a day job entails you sit around the whole day as your calories and fat add up. One advice we can give you is to go outdoors both as an exercise and a profession - specifically, doing hiking. All you need to do is but some equipment outdoors and start training yourself and others.

So why did we chose hiking anyway? Well, hiking is different from any other sport or exercise. Running is a bore and even worse is walking and you could do this anywhere you would want to. Doing yoga or aerobics out in the open is almost the same thing as going to the gym. Hiking on the other hand requires money and dedication from your attendees which means more money for you - hiking entails that go to far flung rural areas because mountain and hills are not common sceneries in a city so you must plan well and ahead of time.

Another thing, hiking requires gear and equipment that are different from what we normally have. Equipment should be reliable and durable because you and the other’s lives depend on it. What makes hiking extremely special is the sense of achievement in climbing a hill or mountain. A feeling that makes you feel on top of the world – not even mentioning that you had a total body workout and you help someone achieve their dream.

Education and the Internet

The worldwide web holds endless possibilities for everyone. Especially for young minds, cyberspace may be a haven of all the information they may ever want to learn. For simple research homework, the young students would opt to surf the web instead of going through the books in the library. Search engines make it possible for students to directly type in their questions and the pages that load up offer straight answers to these typed-in, specific queries. They hastily note these answers and go to school armed with nothing but a print out that only very few read in its entirety.

Therein lays the danger that the web poses on education. It seems to offer information and answers to almost any conceivable question and the young minds are quick to regard them as facts without verifying the sources.

Teachers should encourage their students to at least peruse the books in the libraries and to check the sources of any online information. They should also be taught how to properly cite references to protect the intellectual property of authors.

While they are sill young , it should be emphasized to students that while the internet poses a lot of information for everyone’s consumption, it still takes discernment to decide which is fact or fiction.

The Career-School Balancing Act

Having a part-time job is a smart thing to do when you’re in the university. It does not only earn you a few extra bucks but more importantly, it sharpens up your responsibility and control. It also prepares you to face up to what it is like to have a boss- someone who could be more unforgiving than even the strictest professor you have in school; to have a fixed work schedule- one you cannot get out of just because of a fake fever; and to have a whole other team to work with – one that may not be trained the same way you and your classmates were.

The biggest challenge in keeping both a job (no matter if it’s part-time or full-time) and your school is that you need to be very good in juggling schedules to satisfy the demands of both. A piece of advice: set your priority. And that priority should always, always be your studies. Remember that you went to the university and studied for years and years to be able to pursue your dream career and not some part-time responsibility. However, this does not mean that you can just easily dismiss your responsibilities at work. Being part of a company means that they rely on you to deliver the service they actually pay you for.

Having both school and a job may be difficult at first but all that is needed is some enthusiasm and effort then you can handle both worlds.

Why Review Your Notes after Class

Author: admin  //  Category: Education

There are various types of professors; some are very lively, some are terrors, some are boring and some may just be so-so. Of all these professors, most of the time, the ones hardest to understand are the professors who are boring; sometimes, students just doze their class off, thus knowing little if not, none, about the subject discussed. These professors tend to be over- boring; however, a student must not let this obstacle hinder his learning. One of the best ways to continue learning despite the boring professor is to review one’s notes after the class.

Though it may seem that only nerds do this, it should not be confined only within them; it should be that students, even those who claim not to be nerds, perform this after classes. This activity could help the students internalize the lessons taught. Rereading one’s notes would inevitably lead to a student summarizing the whole lesson; upon this summarization, the students will then find the lesson more understandable. After the effect of the summarization, another effect will take place: remembrance. By rereading the notes, a student will not only better understand what is going on in their lessons but also will be able to remember more things about the lesson.

Being a student, by itself, is a very hard thing; and if you add to this difficulty, the boring ambiance of a professor, problems in understanding and recollecting past lessons will arise.
